INDIA REPORTER TODAY (IRT)

For the first time in 45 years, the prestigious Agriculture University Palampur finds itself without a regular Vice Chancellor, causing significant disruptions in the institution’s functioning. The absence of a VC has led to overlooked developmental projects, administrative irregularities, and decisions being made without the legal authority of a regular VC.

This alarming situation has resulted in widespread dissatisfaction among students, employees, and parents associated with the university. The university’s governance is in disarray due to the absence of a designated leader to oversee its operations.

Historically, the governor of the state had the authority to appoint the VC, but recent reforms passed by the Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu-led Congress government shifted this power to the Chief Minister’s office. However, this change triggered a deadlock when the governor withheld his assent to the bill, asserting a prestige issue regarding the appointment of the VC. This impasse has persisted for four months, causing severe inconvenience and distress to the university and its stakeholders.

The delay in appointing a VC has prompted urgent calls for the Chief Minister to intervene and seek legal recourse, akin to the Punjab AAP Government’s actions, to expedite the appointment process and restore stability to the university. The current situation has become a matter of concern for all involved, emphasizing the need for immediate resolution to prevent further setbacks in the institution’s academic and administrative functions.
