Dr. Rajeev Kumar, HAS, MD, HPTDC Pioneers Excellence in Sports: Kapoor Badminton Academy’s Remarkable Journey Under Visionary Leadership

“Today, I traveled from Kangra to Shimla. At Jawalaji, I had the opportunity to visit the ‘Kapoor Badminton Academy.’

Located primarily in Dhawala, Jawalaji, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, the academy is dedicated to providing top-notch sports facilities for emerging badminton players.

Mr. Ravinder Kapoor, a former coach of the Indian badminton team, leads the Kapoor Badminton Academy. Previously based in Panchkula, he served as the Head Badminton Coach for the Haryana government for over 40 years, producing outstanding national and international players.

Currently, the academy’s badminton hall covers an expansive 10,000 sq. ft. area with four Hova & Wooden courts. A highly professional team of Badminton Coaches is committed to nurturing upcoming badminton professionals for Northern India. The academy offers hostel facilities for both boys and girls, equipped with modern amenities. Emphasis on cleanliness and hygiene, especially in the Mess, is a priority.

Starting as beginners, some players have evolved to become State Winners, representing different states in Nationals.

The academy hosts approximately 50 students from local areas and around 30 hostel students from various states. Recently, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) upgraded KBA from an SAI Extension Centre to a Khelo India Centre.

Notable achievements include Saurav Kapoor, former India team captain, and 12-time Haryana state champion, presently playing for RBI. Gaurav Kapoor, with a national medal and 11-time Haryana state champion, is the reigning Himachal state champion for three consecutive years. Daughter-in-law Simran, a former Haryana state champion, is presently a three-time HP State champion and NIS qualified. Daughter Karishma, a former Haryana state champion, is now a Khelo India coach.

Currently, the academy boasts around 17 state champions representing HP, J&K, UP, Haryana, etc.
