IAS Bairwa Issues Heat Wave Directive to Alter School Timings in Kangra
Kangra, May 20, 2024 – In response to the severe heat wave conditions gripping the region, Hemraj Bairwa, IAS, District Magistrate of Kangra at Dharamshala, has enacted critical measures to protect public health, particularly the well-being of schoolchildren.
Under Order No. 371, dated May 20, 2024, and in accordance with Sections 30 and 33 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, Bairwa has adjusted the operational timings for all public and private schools within Kangra’s jurisdiction, excluding the subdivisions of Dharamshala, Baijnath, Jaisinghpur, and Palampur.
Effective immediately, the new school timings are as follows:
Opening Time: 7:30 AM
Closing Time: 1:00 PM
This adjustment aims to minimize students’ exposure to the peak afternoon heat. Schools have also been instructed to avoid outdoor activities during these hours and to ensure the availability of adequate drinking water for all students.
The decision follows alarming reports of rising temperatures from various parts of the district and forecasts by the India Meteorological Department predicting continued heat wave conditions. These conditions significantly raise the risk of heat-related illnesses, including heat stroke, cardiovascular issues, and respiratory disorders.
District Magistrate Bairwa emphasized the urgency of these preventive measures, stating, “There is a dire need to take preventive actions to avoid any emergency situations that the heat wave might cause.”
The order mandates strict compliance from all educational institutions, with the Deputy Director of Higher Education, the Deputy Director of Elementary Education, and all relevant Sub Divisional Magistrates tasked with ensuring adherence. Any obstruction or non-compliance will be met with legal action.
This proactive measure underscores the administration’s commitment to safeguarding public health amid the challenging heat wave, reinforcing the importance of community resilience and preparedness.
