In a significant reprimand, the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday issued a stern warning to the West Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, regarding the handling of protests related to the tragic rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, leading the bench, expressed deep concerns over the state’s response to the protests that have erupted across the city. “Let not the power of the state of West Bengal be unleashed on peaceful protesters. Whether doctors or civil society, let there not be the power of the state unleashed on them at all,” he remarked during the hearing.
This comes as a sharp criticism of the Banerjee administration, which has been accused of suppressing the voices of those seeking justice. The Chief Justice’s statement underscores the need for restraint and a more humane approach to dealing with dissent, especially when it involves sensitive issues such as the safety of women and the rights of medical professionals.
The court’s dismay extended beyond just the protests, as the Chief Justice also expressed bewilderment at the state government’s apparent inability to manage the situation effectively. “We are unable to comprehend how the state government was not able to handle the issue of vandalism at the hospital,” the Chief Justice noted, pointing to the growing unrest and the administration’s failure to maintain order without resorting to heavy-handed tactics.
Adding to the mounting criticism, Rajesh Suryavanshi, Chairman of the Society for Human Welfare and Mission Against Corruption, has demanded the resignation of Mamata Banerjee on moral grounds. Suryavanshi argued that the Chief Minister’s inability to control the deteriorating situation reflects a serious failure in governance, and stepping down would be the only honourable course of action.
Mamata Banerjee’s government, which has often been criticized for its autocratic approach, now faces increasing scrutiny over its handling of this delicate situation. The Supreme Court’s observations have cast a shadow over the administration’s methods, calling into question the state’s commitment to upholding democratic principles in the face of public outcry.
The tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College has not only shocked the nation but has also ignited a broader debate on the role of the state in protecting its citizens while respecting their right to protest. As the situation continues to unfold, all eyes will be on the West Bengal government and its response to the Supreme Court’s admonition and the growing calls for accountability from civil society leaders like Rajesh Suryavanshi.
