HR Media Group’s Rajesh Suryavanshi Criticizes Election Commission for Inaction Against Himachal Governor’s Misconduct

Shimla, July 25, 2024 — In a scathing critique, Rajesh Suryavanshi, Editor-in-Chief of HR Media Group and Founder Chairman of Mission Against Corruption NGO, has condemned the Election Commission of India for failing to address serious allegations against the Governor of Himachal Pradesh. Suryavanshi’s accusations center on the Governor’s alleged irregularities, fraud, and misappropriation in appointing a Vice-Chancellor (VC) during the Model Code of Conduct period.

Suryavanshi’s complaint, filed on May 2, 2024, details the Governor’s contentious decision to field and appoint a new VC for the Agricultural University in Palampur.

This decision was made despite the Model Code of Conduct being in effect, a period during which such appointments are generally prohibited to ensure fair and transparent elections.

Furthermore, the Governor set the interview date during the election period, compounding the irregularity.

Adding to the controversy, the University Amendment Bill, passed unanimously by the ruling Congress government in the assembly, was withheld by the Governor for a year without returning it to Chief Minister Sukhu’s government for assent. This delay, Suryavanshi argues, was a deliberate obstruction to the democratic process.

The Election Commission, which pledges to conduct smooth and transparent elections, has been criticized for its inaction. Suryavanshi claims that despite the glaring illegalities in the Governor’s actions, the Election Commission has not taken any appropriate legal action.

This perceived protection of the Governor by the Election Commission has led to significant public outcry and confusion.

Even after the declaration of election results a month ago, the Election Commission has yet to address the allegations. Suryavanshi asserts that this continued inaction amounts to the Election Commission shielding the Governor illegally.

He has now sought an inquiry into the Election Commission’s conduct, questioning its commitment to upholding democratic principles and its legal responsibilities.

“The Election Commission’s failure to act against the Governor’s blatant misuse of power is a betrayal of public trust,” Suryavanshi stated. “We demand an immediate and thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable and to restore faith in our electoral processes.”

The Election Commission has not yet responded to Suryavanshi’s demands for an inquiry, leaving many to question the integrity of the electoral oversight in this high-stakes scenario.
